Technology in New Hampshire
In New Hampshire, there is a small company called GT Advanced Technologies this company started off by producing furnaces that would produce silicon for solar panels during this time they were under the name of GT Solar Technologies. They needed more profit so they decided to start selling machines that would make sapphire that was used for high technologies, such as cell phones. “Both the solar and sapphire markets soured in 2013, and the company, eager to snag the world’s biggest technology company as a customer, agreed to sell Apple the sapphire, but not the equipment to make it” (Sanders). This later backfired on them, because when Apple released that they were making the new phones with glass and now with sapphire, Apple broke the contract they had GT Advanced Technologies. So, the company sued Apple because first of all they had broken the contract and secondly the shareholders of GTAT lost a lot of money over this. “Apple Inc. has agreed to pay $3.5 million to settle a class-action lawsuit filed by investors in GT Advanced Technologies who alleged that the corporate giant was partially responsible for the disastrous deal that caused the New Hampshire- based company to declare bankruptcy, costing shareholders to lose more than $1 billion” (Sanders).
Technology in China
In China, there is a new policy where “China’s telecom operators must now use facial recognition technology and other means to verify the identity of people opening new mobile phone accounts” (Goh). Places around China already have these technologies in place, to find criminals, and people they need to find. This movement by the government is being used to crack down on fraud in China. Technology in China is used more to find people and not as a way to communicate, as we do here in America. Not only are there surveillance cameras everywhere, but the police are said to have glasses with cameras which will do the same as surveillance cameras. This system insures that the Chinese government knows who is in there country and where they are.China has also sold these technologies to other countries such as Myanmar and Argentia, the companies that design the cameras say that they want to create “smart-cities”. Now the U.S. does not like this idea of being able to identify everyone in a split second. “There has been U.S. blowback over the work Chinese firms like Megvii and SenseTime have played in Beiginia treatment of Muslim minorties. The United States expanded its trade blacklist in October to include these firms, and other, barring them from buying components from U.S. companies without U.S. government approval” (Goh).

Hi Ana,
ReplyDeleteYou did a great job on your blog. It is interesting how you said that technology in China is used to find people and not communicate like it is here in America. That GT company sounds like a good company to have in NH.
I agree with you Charlotte! I find it strange that China needs that much control over their Citizens, and yes GT Technology is a good company.
DeleteWhat, specifically, led to the trade ban that you mention at the end of your post? How does facial recognition software relate to the treatment of Muslim minorities?
ReplyDeleteI appreciate the local article. Do you think that Apple should have been forced to pay; what was the reasoning behind this decision?
Hi Ana, this is a very interesting comparison, but it a little bit brief I wish I had more information on these two topics.
ReplyDeleteAna, do you think that the increase in technology with in NH 911 has saved lives. For example you are now able to text NH 911, or has increased the road maps for the local call centers to figure out where you are located.
