Technology and the Fears for the Future

Technology today has changed a lot since the first-ever computer or phone. Technology has many people worried about what will happen in the future, “Many of our greatest fears stem from uncertainty about the future, and technology has made the future very uncertain indeed”(Dickinson). Kevin Dickinson puts this very well because number one he’s right and number two it shows why people are so afraid for what technology will look like someday in the near future. No one can predict the future, especially when it comes to one of the most unpredictable things. Technology has been put into our daily lives whether we like it or not, my mother is a nurse and they always have to be filling out forms, and getting medication for patients. With the help of “robots” in some hospitals they allow for the nurses to be with their patients, while the robots go around helping with their rounds.

Robots in Hospitals
Robots in hospitals are very useful, they are designed to grab pills and place them in containers, then run them to the patients, they also can bring food to patients as well. Robots are also designed to help doctors in surgery, where the surgery needs very small and precise tools such as exact bone cuts by using the robotics in these surgeries it allows for patients to have a faster healing period after the surgery. Robots can also be used to allow long-distance calls from a patient to their own doctor, these are called telehealth products, this device allows the doctor to check in on his/her patient to make sure they are doing well. Robotics can also help with monitoring the patients 24/7, this allows the nurses to be able to watch and make sure their patients are doing well. By using computers “Nurses can visualize this information quickly and clearly, as opposed to trying to decipher the handwriting” (Robots Changing Healthcare).

Biomedical Technologies
They are bio-friendly materials to help replace failing organs if need be, they can also help with children with debilitating diseases. “Biomedical technologies promise a future where we are all better, stronger, faster and at a fraction of the cost of one Steve Austin”(Dickinson). People fear these because they feel it can be too controlling and that it could take over the world, or maybe a little less extreme. But like Dickinson said it will make our future better and stronger. They are also talking about genetic editing, “genetic editing to reduce babies' risk of disease (68 percent), and synthetic blood to improve physical abilities (63 percent).”(Dickinson)

  1. Ana, you provide some good views of the positive sides of robots in nursing and other fields. Are there concerns that robots will take over the nursing profession?

    1. Ms. LaClair, there are no concerns as of right now that robots will take nurses jobs because patients prefer to still have human interaction with the nurses. So, yes robots can do the job of a nurse but at hospitals anything could go wrong and a robot might not know how to handle it.

  2. Did it say around what expected year this was supposed to happen

  3. With the technology in hospitals now, do you think in the near future robots will be doing all the surgeries?
